| بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم وصلى الله وسلم على خاتم النبيئين والمرسليين سيدنا محمد صلوات الله عليه
السلام عليكم أصدقائي الكرام- تحياتي لزوار قسم المناهج التعليمية
هدفنا الأسمى هو خلق جو من الاستفادة Today my friends, i am going to explain a new lesson. And i hope that everyone will understand it easily. The lesson is "The Passive Voice
Please try to read what i say carefully. if you want to understand this lesson you have to know the 'To Be'. now
let us see the verb to be
In the present
Is /are
In the past
Was/ were
Present perfect
Has been/ have been
Past perfect
Had been
now, try to grasp what i am going to do
We can start with this easy example
* Ahmed reads short stories
We should ask ourselves a question: Ahmed reads WHAT???? now
Short stories
So we want to rewrite the sentence given in the passive voice
so this action is in the present, so we will use to be in the present. To be in the present is /is or Are
Because we have SHORT STORIES we have to use ARE
Also the verb is read, now we will need the past participale of this verb
now we can say
Short stories are read by Ali
Now, i will give an other example
* They listen to slow music
So this action is the present. now we have to use TO BE in the present
We should ask ourselves, they listen to What?
Slow music (is singular) so we will put IS when we want to rewite the sentence given in the passive
now we can say
Slow music is listened (by them) .
Listened is the past participal of the verb TO LISTEN
Now, we are going to see some examples in the past
First, when we have an action in the past and we want to rewrite it in the passive form, we have to use To Be in the past. for example
Salma did the exercise
Now we will put The exercise. the action is in the past. we have to use To be in the past. it WAS/WERE. because The exercise is singular we have to use Was
Now we can say
The exercise was done by Salma
Done is the past participal of the verb given in the exapmle (did)
Let us a second exaple to clarify this
*William Shakespeare wrote terrific poems
We will start with TERRIFIC POEMS
The action is the past, so we have to use To Be in the past
now we can say
Terrific Poems were written (by W.S
بالنسبة للتلاميد اللدين لم يستوعبوا بعد فلا يفقدون الأمل فما زلت أشرح وبالتالي حاولواالتتبع
Now, we will see some examples in the present perfect and past perfect
Please try to look carefully
* Mohammed the sixth has visited Rabat
Because the action is the present perfect, we have to use the verb to be in the present perfect too
Now, we can say
Rabat has been visited by Mohammed the sixth
Rabat is singular, so this is the reason why we used Has been
and Visited is the past participal of the verb Visit
Look carefully, i will give a second example
*Kamal has watched war films
So, we are going to start with War Films
War Films are plural, so we have to put Have been
Now we can say,
War fims have been watched by Kamal
Now look at this last example in the past perfect
* They had bought a computer
The action is in the past perfect, so we have to put the verb to be in the past perfect
A computer had been bought (by them
Bought is the past participal of Buy
But when we have a verb given with ING
please try to look carefully, you may find some difficulties
now i will give some examples
for example
He is playing a soccer match
so the action is in the present progressive
so we can say easily
A soccer match is being played by him
so IS is the verb to be in the present. and because we have the verb given followed by Ing we used Being. and Played is the past participal of the verb PLAY
Now look at this sentence
The action is in the past progressive
* Fatima was reading a newspaper
So because the action is in the past, we have to use To Be in the past. and because we have the verb To Read followed by Ing we have to put Being. and the past participal of Read is Read
So we can say
A newspaper was being read by Fatima
(By Fatima is optional
Look at this example carefully. Going to+ verb
He is going to organize a party
So we can say
A party is going to be organized (by him
look at this second example
He is going to do two exercises
now we can say
Two exercises are going to be done (by him
We used Are because we have Two exercises (they are plural
Now, be carefully
we will use the models
the models are (will+ can+may+must+can't+have to....
Look at these examples. they are easy enough to be understood
* Students must do the homework
Now we can say
The homework must be done by students
We put the model given in the sentense+ be in the infinitive+ the past participal of the verb given
The second example
Ali may find a solution
Now we can say
A solution may be found by Ali
An other example
He has to send the letters
We can say
The letters have to be sent (by him
We used HAVE because we the letters and it's plural
I hope that everyone will understand this lesson
Exercise
Rewrite these sentences as indicated
1- Eveyone must respect the law
2- My mother was cooking lunch
3- Fatima is going to start her business
4-He should play sport
5- Adil has got good marks
6- He was seeking a job
7- People shouldn't consider women as inferior to men
8- Oprah Winfrey will open a new morning talk show on MBC TV channel
9- English people still keep Princess Diana in mind
10- My sister cleaned the house by herself
Good luck
